چکیده

Introduction: In this Letter an optical fibre sensor capable of making fully distributed measurements of a wide range of solvents is identified. Microbending principles have been used to develop the sensor such that it responds on contact with liquid solvents, typically within 30 seconds of exposure. The sensor incorporates a swelling polymer and optical fibre components that are readily available in the optical communications industry. A conventional optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) technique is utilised for sensor interrogation and location of multiple spill events over a range of 20km. The sensor uses a low-power laser source to perform the sensing function and due to its optical nature is intrinsically safe. The operational characteristics of the sensor and the underlying technology utilised in its operation are described. The swelling characteristics of the polymer material in a range of solvents and experimental test results of prototype sensors are presented.

Sensitivity Enhancement of Fiber Optic Diesel Adulteration Detection Sensor Using Stripped Clad SBend Section

A novel geometry for enhancing the sensitivity of intensity modulated refractometric fiber optic sensor for detection of adulteration level in diesel by kerosene is proposed. In this multimode plastic optical fiber is uncladded for specific length and bent into S shape. This geometry is simulated and analyzed using Beam Propagation Method in Beam prop RSOFT software. When sensor is immersed in ...

Distributed Fibre Optic Sensors for the Detection of Liquid Spills

A range of distributed fibre optic sensors for the detection and location of aqueous, chemical and hydrocarbon fluid spills is presented. The sensors incorporate polymers that convert the swelling into a localised loss on an optical fibre when fluid exposure occurs. Optical Time Domain Reflectometry (OTDR) techniques are employed to rapidly detect and locate target liquids and chemicals at mult...

Outlier Detection in Wireless Sensor Networks Using Distributed Principal Component Analysis

Detecting anomalies is an important challenge for intrusion detection and fault diagnosis in wireless sensor networks (WSNs). To address the problem of outlier detection in wireless sensor networks, in this paper we present a PCA-based centralized approach and a DPCA-based distributed energy-efficient approach for detecting outliers in sensed data in a WSN. The outliers in sensed data can be ca...

A fiber optic sensor for measuring glucose in aqueous solutions

In this paper, the set-up of a multi-mode fiber optic sensor for measuring glucose in aqueous solutions is investigated and evaluated. The basis of this sensor is based on the Fresnel Reflection. In this setup, a helium-neon laser is used as a light source, a fiber optic probe, photocell as detector and a digital multimeter. The statistical analysis of the recorded data shows a highly linear be...

A fluorescent coagulation assay for thrombin using a fibre optic evanescent wave sensor.

A fibre optic evanescent wave sensor is used for the rapid detection of thrombin. Coagulation of solution phase fluorescently labelled fibrinogen to unlabelled fibrinogen bound to the surface of the fibre optic is observed in real time by the evanescent wave sensor. Thrombin concentrations down to 0.01 NIHml(-1) are detectable within 5 min. The potential application of this technique for rapid ...
